Jonathan rode to the Racetrack alone on Elkie, his 1999 R1100GS — a stop on a longer day in Death Valley. Late afternoon, shadows stretching north across the playa, the light doing what it does in that last hour before it disappears. The sliding stones are legendary.

The Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, California, is one of the most iconic and mysterious landscapes in the West. Set in a remote valley between the Cottonwood and Last Chance Ranges, this dry lakebed is known for its “sailing stones”—rocks that slowly move across the playa under rare conditions of water, ice, and wind, leaving long tracks behind them.
